A username that sounds like it came off an old map

Some usernames sound like they have a backstory. Aelwyn. Thornwarden. Morthas of the Vale. This generator builds names like that. It invents new fantasy words from syllables and pairs them with things you'd find in an epic: runes, oaths, wyrms, briars and blades.

Since most of these names are invented, they're also far more likely to be open than a regular word. That makes this a good pick for gamertags, Discord, and anyone who wants a handle nobody else has.

    How to use it

    1. Leave the box empty for invented names, or type your name or a word to build from.
    2. Keep the style on Fantasy. Try Dark for a grimmer tone.
    3. Generate, copy the one you like, and roll again for more.

    How fantasy names are built

There's a reason some made up names sound elvish and others sound like they belong to an orc warlord. It comes down to sounds. J.R.R. Tolkien, who built full languages for Middle-earth, based Quenya's sound on Finnish and Sindarin's on Welsh. That's where the soft, flowing feel of elvish names comes from.

You can use the same idea when picking a fantasy username:

    • Soft sounds feel elvish or magical. L, th, s and vowels. Endings like -wyn, -iel, -ora and -endil.
    • Hard sounds feel dwarven or dark. K, g, r and d. Endings like -dor, -orn, -ric and -thas.
    • A title adds weight. Tack on a word like warden, blade or song, and a name becomes a character.

The generator mixes all three, so if a batch feels too soft, roll again or switch styles.

Fitting a fantasy name into a game

Fantasy names get long fast, and games have limits. An Xbox gamertag can have at most 12 characters before the numbered suffix, so Loraendilwarden won't fit, but Loraendil will. Roblox allows 3 to 20 characters with one underscore. If your favorite is too long, drop the title word and keep the invented name. It's the rare part anyway.

Need a regular gamertag instead? Use the gamertag generator. Want real first and last names for a character? The name generator is built for that.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a good fantasy username?
An invented name with a clear sound, like Aelwyn for something elvish or Morthas for something darker. Add a title like warden or blade if you want more drama.
Can I make a fantasy username from my own name?
Yes. Type your name and the generator will add fantasy endings and titles, like Corawyn or MaxBlade.
Are these fantasy names free to use?
Yes. They're generated at random, so use any of them anywhere you like.
What's the difference between a fantasy username and a fantasy name?
A fantasy username is a single handle made for an account. A fantasy character name usually has a first and last name. This tool makes handles. For more ideas, see unique usernames.
