How to Change Your Steam Username

Change your Steam username, profile name or custom URL. Our guide covers the difference between them and how to update each one.

How to change your name on Steam

Steam has a few different names, and people often mix them up. There is your profile name, which is the display name others see, your custom URL, and your account name, which is the private login you type to sign in. Here is how each one works.

Change your profile display name

  1. Open Steam and click your name in the top right, then View my profile.
  2. Click Edit Profile.
  3. Update the Profile Name field to whatever you want shown.
  4. Save your changes at the bottom of the page.

Your profile name can be changed as often as you like, and it can include spaces and most characters.

Change your custom URL

  1. Go to Edit Profile.
  2. Find the Custom URL field.
  3. Enter a unique URL name. If it is available, it becomes your profile link.
  4. Save your changes.

About your account name

Your account name is the login you created when you signed up, and Steam does not let you change it. If you really want a different login, the only option is a new account, which means starting your library over, so most people simply leave the account name alone and change the display name instead.

Choosing a good Steam name

Your display name is the one everyone sees, so make it something you like. For gaming friendly ideas, generate options with the gamertag generator or browse username ideas.
